It was expected to receive a warm welcome in India, but the vibrating condom has generated a fierce debate on its actual purpose.
When Hindustan Latex Limited launched ‘Crezendo’ three months ago, it expected to capture the market with this unique product which it described as a condom that “provides ultimate pleasure by producing strong vibrations”. But instead of capturing favourable response, the vibrating condom has attracted severe criticism from many sectors.
The controversial condom comes in a pack of three and contains a battery-operated ring-like device. Critics have raised objection on this product and termed it as a sex toy.
Sex toys are banned in India, and as a result the vibrating condom has caused an outcry among the conservative sectors of India. This outrage is especially loud in the state of Madhya Pradesh where the new condom is launched. Madhya Pradesh minister for road and energy, Kailash Vijayvargiya told BBC:
Sex toys are banned in India and the vibrating device is nothing but a sex toy being sold as condoms. The government’s job is to promote family planning and population control measures rather than market products for sexual pleasure.
Meanwhile, the company is defending itself by sayiing that the new condoms were introduced to promote the use of condoms in order to prevent the spread of Aids. The company further clarified that the vibrating ring was added as a pleasure enhancer to motivate more people to use condoms. The company shunned the allegations that its product is a sex toy, but said it would withdraw the product if the state government calls for it.
As the war continues, we will wait and experience the tremors caused by the vibrating condom.
