Terror attacks in Mumbai: Taj and Oberoi hotels under siege
Mumbai city has fallen prey to the biggest ever terrorist operation in India. In a well-planned and synchronized manner, heavily-armed terrorists attacked 10 major landmarks in the heart of India’s financial capital on Wednesday evening. The main target of the terrorists were foreigners and policemen. The two five star hotels of the city, Taj and Oberoi, are still under the controls of terrorists.

As per the latest reports, over 100 people are killed, including Anti-Terrorism Squad Chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar. The figure of injured people has crossed the 300 mark.

The first attack took place at Leopold restaurant at Colaba and then a string of attacks followed at various public places including the CST (VT) railway station, GT hospital and Cama hospital. However, the pin has rested on three spots, Taj hotel, Oberoi hotel and Nariman House in Colaba, where the security forces are still engaged in a gun battle with the terrorists to gain control and release the guests (mostly foreigners) who are taken hostage by the terrorists.

At around 3:25 AM, an explosion was heard from the old wing of Taj hotel and the hotel went into flames. And then followed the hostage drama with sounds of firing from inside the new tower.

Update: 150 hostages are released from Taj and 20 hostages are still believed to be in the hold of the terrorists. Seven British citizen are reported dead. Till now, three terrorists are killed by the security forces. Deccan Mujahideen claims the responsibility for the attacks. NSG commandos enter Taj hotel.

Update 1:
Five unidentified dead bodies are found on the seventh floor of new Tower of Taj hotel. IB claims that preliminary investigations point towards involvement of Pakistani nationals in the attacks.

Update 2: According to DGP A N Roy, all people trapped in Taj have been rescued and there is no hostage-like situation right now. However, the guests are still trapped in Oberoi.

Update 3: Fresh explosions amidst gunfire sounds have been reported from inside Taj hotel. NSG Director General Jyoti Krishan Dutt said commandos are involved in a fierce encounter with terrorists inside the Taj Hotel. Further, he has stated that all the commandos are safe and the operation should finish in 30 minutes.

Update 4: Latest figure shows 125 killed (including 14 policemen) and 327 injured. Terrorists kill wife and three children of Hotel Taj’s G M. NSG has claimed that all the terrorist at Taj are killed while 30 terrorists are trapped in Oberoi. Also, three terrorists are reported in Nariman house where the NSG is battling for control. Seven hostages have been rescued from Nariman House whereas three NSG officers are reportedly hurt in the operation.

Update 5: FBI is reported to be sending unit from LA to Mumbai because of potential American hostages. NSG says one terrorist is still left in Taj.

Update 6 Eight foreign nationals killed - 3 Germans, 1 Japanese, 1 Australian, 1 Canadian, while the nationality of two has not been ascertained yet. The death toll has risen to 155 while 327 reported injured.

Update 7: Five hostages reportedly killed at Nariman House, operation is still on and the situation is unclear. Taj Tower has been cleared of terrorists and combing operation is on but the situation at Taj Heritage is unclear where a fresh explosion was reported. Contrary to earlier reports, it is believed that more than one (around six) terrorists are still inside Taj. The battle continues. Hopefully, the operation at Oberoi hotel has come to an end, 148 hostages have been released from Oberoi.

Update 8: (Saturday, November 29. 4:36 AM IST) Three terrorists still at Taj. The operation is expected to continue over night, says NSG. Also the death toll of foreign nationals has risen to 13, including the Israeli rabbi and his wife (who were killed at Nariman House).

My Indian friends tells me every time that India is a country of impotent politicians. They will make lot of noise. They are not able to defend their citizens. The only solution is clean whole Parliament (which ever way -violent or nonviolent) and bring new generation of leaders ,not these old ancient leaders.

This time it is not a conflict between Muslims and Hindus. It's an attack against the SECULAR democratic Republic of India by Islamic extremists. They have killed people indiscriminately and have reportedly tried to take US and UK nationals hostage. It's not a petty religious conflict. It's an attack on those who believe in freedom and liberty.

I'm SICK OF MUSLIM TERRORISTS KILLING PEOPLE! Why won't their community do something about it? I understand that there are wonderful and peaceful Muslims out there but until they take responsibility for the Quran and the statements it makes about "killing those who don't believe", we need to disallow entry into our countries. The Quran openly states that all Muslims should go out into the world and convert or kill non-believers. How are we still allowing these people into our borders!? If the Bible told me to kill people, I wouldn't be Christian!

Next few weeks will see, more blood shed. This time it will be the blood of Muslims. And no, there is no innocent Muslims. Yeah, I hate muslims...they think by killing others they go to Allah...ok, let's send them to Allah....bastards...all of them.

This situation has been building for a while now, and although everyone here seems intent on blaming Islam for it all there is definitely more that one aggravating factor. There is an extreme faction in the Hindu BJP party that have an agenda to rid India of all Muslims and Christians. If you do you homework you will find dozens of stories about this, church and mosque burnings, rapes and killings have been commonplace lately. The main difference being the Christians in India wont fight back but the Muslims aren't. India is a very fractured country, no easy answers here.

Nice to see that an Egyptian knows about the BJP in India.

Of course BJP is not exactly Egyptian Islamic Jihad and LK Advani is not Ayman al-Zawahiri.

@ El, what you have stated is utterly baseless. Please don’t try to defend the heinous crime that has taken place. Being far away from India you can never understand the situation. What have innocent people and foriegn nationals got to do with the fight between Christians and Muslims? India is not fractured at all, it will definitely bounce back. The resilience of the Mumbaikars have already proved that.

LOL!! I hope you’re wrong about people not being able to understand because they are far away from events, because if you’re right, no-one would be able to write about or comment anything but where they come from! :p

no, but seriously, I too do not agree with EL. He doesn’t seem to have done his homework.

My take?

There are many ideas on why it was done and there is a little truth in them, but, at the end of the day, moderate muslims, hindus, christians and everyone else will lose this war unless they stand united against this obscurantism, for these terrorists are quite simply trying to bring down democracy, freedom, and the right to believe in god how they see him.

If we (yes WE) lose this war, opinions like these on an internet site will become, quite simply, a thing of the past.

Taking sides here is playing into their hands..........and fanning the flames.

Very well said, Reshmi. Mumbaikars have endured situations much worse than this in the past. And I’m sure, we will this time too.

@El, please do not draw conclusion without peeping into the history. You ill-comment is unwarranted as it comes from you who belong to a country which once gave the world a glorious civilization. Do you know that wheat grains were exported to the world from Egypt? But the problem is with the Wahabis and the Muslim Brotherhood which is too out to ruin Mideast countries. Though the BJP in India is a right wing party but it does not have such a sweeping influence over the population that it can break the centuries old pluralism in India. BJP had been in power for a term of five year. What did it do to hurt the interests of Muslims, the biggest minority in India? None. In fact Muslims in India constitute the second biggest Muslim population in a country after Indonesia. They number 120 million and have a steady growth rate. Please do not covertly extend support to terrorists who have no religion.

This is foreigners killing foreigners in my country. Mumbai Police can kill innocent people like Rahul Raj. Now what had they been doing in the face of real tough terrorists? Top coppers shot dead on roads. How humiliating it can get for an organization, whose very task is to counter terrorism, whose chief is killed so effortlessly? Then some of the terrorists hijack police cars, kill more people and escape!

Everyone just doing nothing discussions and only discussions, through what situation each and every mumbaikar is going is beyond explaination. Police is looking and treating every single person as a suspect. But everytime mumbai had shown courage this time also same would happen, but still operations are on three locations are going on, it seems no end since wednesday night. Innocent peoples were killed on road, hotle lobby, as hostasge. Our pride Taj is been destructed by several attacks n fire. We lossed ATS cheif and 2 other top IPS serving in mumbai including several policemen.

@ Michael, sorry...never meant that...was furious at the stupid comment...:P! Of course all sane people should unite and raise their voice at such trying times. It’s a disaster...and atleast we can display solidarity by showing our antipathy towards such barbaric crimes. I maybe living in a Fool’s Paradise...but somewhere at the back of my mind I still believe pen is mightier than the sword. Amen to that.
